“Fortaleza de Santa Teresa”

sand and stone

Colonel Tomas Luis Osorio on October 6, 1762, fulfilling orders from the lieutenant general Gomez Freire de Andrade count of Bobadela,

to protect these lands from the Spanish advance,

installed the fundamental stone , 9 days later ...began

Santa Teresa’s  construction, name as the favorite saint of Bobadela.

Later on, capture by the Spanish, On April 19, 1763, the general

Pedro de Cevallos conquered the place, making Osorio a prisoner.

The Spanish Viceroy decided to build there a very strong fortress, with an irregular pentagonal shape, perfect, as it is in a strategic position, for surveillance. A map of that epoch shows clearly, that

“La Angostura" (called this place) was the safest route

between the sea and the Black lagoon; it was the only possible way

to enter the Oriental Band. Wetlands, areas of marshland and slightly trustworthy estuaries were the whole rest, especially for the ancient armies, who were moving artillery and weighed implements.

Ashlars stone joined by stirrups and refilled by ground and

pieces of rubble, had built it's double walls, making them more resistant

to the vibrations of the weapon and cannon’s shots.

After the independence of Uruguay, the fortress become a refuge for Oribe‘s forces at the civil war “ Guerra Grande” so-called " Big War ",

up to being abandoned later on...
