National Park San Miguel |
José da Silva Páez, a Portuguese Lusitanian brigadier, built the Fort of San Miguel in 1737. Here you will be able to see Portuguese architectural style. In 1763, the Spanish took control of the fort. Thr Restoration began in 1923 and in 1937, it became a National Historic Building. It is located inside the National Park San Miguel, with a protected marshland area that lodges an important ecosystem. In 1970 ,it was declared, along with that of Santa Teresa, a Refuge of Indigenous Fauna. There is also a memorial park, with a charnel house of the XVIIIth century - historical cemetery - You can also see wild cattle the same way our ancestors brought them to La Banda Oriental centuries ago. A 50Km. from the fort , coming back to route 9 towards the south at the Km. 302, close “ La Coronilla” you can find The Fortress of Santa Teresa . Unlike the “Fortin of San Miguel”, the Portuguese has begun its construction of the “Fortaleza of Santa Teresa”. |
